Assaf Gruber

Assaf Gruber (Jerusalem, 1980) is a sculptor and filmmaker who lives and works in Berlin.

The dialectical relationship between the individual and the establishment is at the center of his work, which explores how the political orientation of institutions impacts the lives of individuals and how institutions choose to represent and communicate scientific and historical facts.

The absurd biographies of the protagonists in his projects, simultaneously reveal and obscure the reasons and motives that cause individuals to obey or rebel against their inner world or the society in which they live. Gruber’s photography, sculpture and video works place the materiality in relation to a physical scale, which creates a fictional space, where movement and non-movement function as a medium.

Gruber studied at Cooper Union New-York and is a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and of the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) in Ghent.  He had solo exhibitions at the Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi (2015), The Berlinische Galerie (2018) and the Center for Contemporary Art U-jazdowski Castle, Warsaw (2018) among other institutions. His films have been featured in festivals, including the Berlinale Film Festival, FID Marseille and the International Short Film Festival of Oberhausen.
