Haviv Kaptzon
Haviv Kaptzon’s work is a continuous exploration of what it means to be human, navigating the complexities of shared and individual experiences. Drawing from history, philosophy, personal moments, and digital media, Kaptzon constructs layered narratives that resonate with today’s rapidly shifting world. By combining diverse materials and sources—from archival footage and memes to YouTube clips and personal recordings—he blends poetic and humorous elements to reveal human nature through fresh storytelling.
Central to Kaptzon’s practice is a challenge to conventional methods of organizing and disseminating knowledge. He engages with authoritative forms—academic lectures, documentaries, and historical museums—reinterpreting them to create a nonlinear narrative that fuses historical events, mystical beliefs, and scientific truths. This approach disrupts traditional methods of conveying ideology and truth, offering subversive ways to question perception and knowledge.
Specializing in video and installation art, Kaptzon merges objects, drawings, and films to craft immersive experiences. Recently, he has expanded into video-mapping, projecting onto objects and unconventional surfaces to transform spaces into dynamic theaters of fragmented images. In his work “The Naked Astronaut,” exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Kaptzon projected video onto leaning walls, intentionally breaking the image into distinct fragments and channels. This multidimensional approach explores the interplay between visual and tactile elements, redefining the boundaries of conventional cinema and visual art. Through this method, Kaptzon invites viewers to experience complex, resonant narratives that encourage a reimagined perspective on reality.
